Hunger Strike to Be Held in Berlin in Support of Imprisoned Women Journalists and Religious Women in Azerbaijan

Berlin, Germany — A hunger strike will be held on 15 June 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Federal Chancellery of Germany (Bundeskanzleramt) in Berlin to draw attention to the imprisonment of women journalists and religious women in Azerbaijan.
The protest will take place at:
Willy-Brandt-Straße 1
10557 Berlin, Germany
According to the organizers, the action is dedicated to nine women journalists and six religious women currently imprisoned in Azerbaijan. The participants will call on the German government, European institutions, and international human rights organizations to raise their voices against the ongoing repression and to demand the immediate release of women imprisoned for their journalistic, civic, or religious activities.
The imprisoned women journalists include:
Sevinj Vagifgizi, Nargiz Absalamova, Elnara Gasimova, Aynur Elgunash, Aytaj Ahmadova, Aysel Umudova, Khayala Aghayeva, Fatima Movlamli, and Ulviyya Ali.
The six religious women whose cases will also be highlighted are:
Nigar Baghirova, Ayten Ibrahimova, Shahla Farajova, Khoshgadam Guliyeva, Sharqiyya Sadigova, and Arzu Huseynova.
Organizers say the hunger strike is intended as a peaceful act of solidarity with women who have been deprived of their freedom amid Azerbaijan’s continuing crackdown on independent media, civil society, and religious communities.
They also emphasize that the imprisonment of women journalists and religious believers is not only a domestic human rights issue, but also a matter of international concern, particularly for European institutions that maintain political and diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan.
The organizers urge human rights defenders, journalists, activists, members of the Azerbaijani diaspora, and representatives of democratic institutions to attend the protest and show solidarity.
The action will begin at 11:00 a.m. on 15 June 2026 in front of the German Federal Chancellery in Berlin.
