Journalist and editor Ulviyya Ali marked one year of imprisonment this week. Ali was arrested in May 2025 during a wave of detentions targeting independent media outlets. She faces charges of smuggling which her defense team and press freedom organizations call fabricated.

Prior to her arrest Ali edited a news website covering corruption in the construction sector. From prison she has managed to send several dispatches describing conditions including overcrowding and limited access to legal counsel.

Voice of America aired a special segment marking the anniversary featuring interviews with her colleagues now in exile.
