Construction work is continuing on a new airport near the Alat settlement and the Baku International Sea Trade Port, with the facility expected to focus primarily on cargo transportation rather than passenger services.

The project aims to expand Azerbaijan’s logistics capabilities and strengthen the country’s position as a key regional transport hub. Officials say the new cargo airport will support faster and more efficient delivery of goods transported through the Middle Corridor and the Zangezur Corridor.

The facility is expected to create new opportunities for the transportation of high-value and time-sensitive cargo, allowing shipments to reach international markets more quickly.

The new airport is also projected to contribute to the export potential of companies operating in the Alat Free Economic Zone. The infrastructure is expected to facilitate access to foreign markets for local producers and attract additional investment opportunities to Azerbaijan.

Experts say the development of a dedicated cargo airport will be an important step in creating an integrated logistics network combining air, maritime, rail, and road transportation.

Azerbaijan plans to put its first cargo airport into operation next year.
