Political scientist Bahruz Samadov who has been imprisoned since 2024 for his anti-war writings received an invitation to address the UN Human Rights Council via video link. The Azerbaijani government immediately objected calling the invitation an affront to national sovereignty.
Samadov’s case has attracted attention from academic freedom organizations worldwide. He was convicted of treason for publishing articles criticizing Azerbaijan’s military operations. Multiple Nobel laureates have signed an open letter calling for his release.
The UN forum is scheduled for June and it remains unclear whether authorities will permit the video appearance.
