Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States, according to photographs published by Iran’s state news agency Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

The images show Pezeshkian holding a Persian-language copy of the document, with signatures appearing at the bottom, including what was reported to be his signature and that of US President Donald Trump.

The signing marks a new step in efforts to formalize a ceasefire framework between Washington and Tehran after years of confrontation and escalating tensions.

Trump signs document in France

According to a US official, Trump signed a printed version of the agreement in Versailles, France. The United States then sent a photograph of the signed document to Iranian officials.

The memorandum contains around 800 words and 14 points, focusing on expanding the current ceasefire arrangement, reducing military tensions and restoring commercial movement through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Focus on ceasefire and future negotiations

The agreement reportedly establishes a framework for ending hostilities, maintaining dialogue and beginning negotiations toward a broader final deal.

Key elements include commitments to avoid further escalation, restore maritime traffic, discuss sanctions relief and address Iran’s nuclear program through future negotiations.

The memorandum is not considered a final peace treaty but rather a political framework designed to open the way for a comprehensive agreement.

Remaining uncertainties

Despite the symbolic importance of the signing, major issues remain unresolved, including the future of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, the exact mechanism for sanctions removal and how compliance will be monitored.

Officials on both sides have indicated that technical details still need to be negotiated before a final agreement can be completed.

If implemented, the deal would represent one of the most significant diplomatic developments between Iran and the United States in recent years, potentially affecting regional security, energy markets and international relations.
