Seven Meydan TV journalists currently on trial held up copies of press freedom declarations during their latest court hearing before being ordered to stop by the judge. The gesture lasted approximately 30 seconds and was witnessed by family members in the gallery.
All seven face charges related to alleged illegal business activities connected to foreign funding of the media outlet. Their collective trial has become a focal point for international press freedom advocacy with World Press Freedom Day events in May featuring their case prominently.
Defense lawyers requested the removal of the presiding judge citing bias but the motion was denied.
