A protest action in support of imprisoned female journalists and women facing charges related to their religious beliefs in Azerbaijan is continuing in Berlin, Germany.

The demonstration, organized by Muslim Unity Movement’s European representation and activists including Orkhan Agayev, has called for the release of detained women and raised concerns over what participants describe as politically motivated prosecutions in Azerbaijan.

Organizers said that some participants have joined a hunger strike as part of the protest, describing the action as a final form of peaceful resistance aimed at drawing international attention to the situation in Azerbaijan.

Protesters accuse authorities of political repression

During speeches at the rally, participants criticized the growing number of arrests in Azerbaijan, particularly cases involving journalists, activists and women accused in connection with their religious views.

The protesters described these detentions as “politically motivated” and argued that they reflect serious restrictions on freedom of expression, freedom of conscience and other fundamental rights.

They called on Azerbaijani authorities to end what they described as political persecution and to release all individuals they consider political prisoners.

Calls for international response

Participants urged European Union institutions and international human rights organizations to take a more active role in addressing human rights concerns in Azerbaijan.

Speakers argued that stronger international pressure is needed to prevent further restrictions on civil liberties and to ensure compliance with European human rights standards.

They specifically criticized the prosecution of journalists for their professional activities and the imprisonment of people because of their religious beliefs.

Organizers promise continued actions

During the event, organizers Orkhan Agayev and Elvin Shikhaliyev said that defending human rights is a universal responsibility and announced that similar actions would continue.

Members of the Muslim Unity Movement’s European representation, as well as several Azerbaijani political emigrants, attended the demonstration and expressed support for the protesters.

The rally in Berlin is being held under police supervision and has continued peacefully. Participants reiterated their demand for the release of people currently imprisoned in Azerbaijan and called for greater attention from the international community.
