Rail Abbasov – public activist Arrested: 19 September 2023 Charge: Article 178.3.2 (Swindle, that is maintaining another persons property or buying another persons property by a deceit or breach of confidence, committed by organized group) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.

On 20 September 2023, the Baku City Nasimi District Court issued an order: to satisfy the investigator’s petition on arrest and issue a preventive measure against Rail Abbasov in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months.

The period of detention in custody during the investigation has been subsequently extended several times Sentence: On 9 January 2025, the Baku City Court for Serious Crimes issued a verdict: to find Rail Abbasov guilty on all charges and sentenced him to 6 years and 6 months imprisonment with serving the sentence in a general regime penal institution.

According to his lawyer Zubeyda Sadigova, Abbasov was detained on the basis of a complaint from a certain citizen.

"Rail Abbasov does not accept the charges and declares that they want to arrest him in order to remove activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev from public protection," the lawyer said.

Azerbaijani human rights activists consider Abbasov's arrest a political order.

After all, Rail Abbasov was actively involved in the protection of the rights of the arrested activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, that's why he was arrested.

A few days before his arrest, Rail Abbasov drafted a petition to the head of state, which was signed by a number of well-known public figures calling for the release of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev. 38
